Celebrated actress, director, and partner of director Ingmar Bergman, Liv Ullmann joins us for an evening on the legendary Swedish filmmaker’s life and work. This event opens our fall series Ingmar Bergman: A Tribute in Film, in celebration of the centenary of Bergman’s birth.
The event begins with an introduction by Ullmann, followed by a screening of Saraband, Bergman’s final film and the sequel to his iconic Scenes From a Marriage. Following the screening, Ullmann will present a discussion with Laurence Kardish (former Senior Curator, Museum of Modern Art).
Saraband, made by Bergman while he was in his mid-80s, returns to Marianne (Liv Ullmann) and Johan (Erland Josephson) thirty years after the divorce that concluded Scenes From a Marriage. When Marianne decides to visit her former husband, now a widower, she is drawn into a family crisis involving his insolvent son Henrik and his granddaughter Karin, who is in the midst of preparing for an audition for the European music conservatory. As events unfold and a complicated power struggle takes place, Marianne soon realizes that things are not all as they should be.
Ingmar Bergman: A Tribute in Film
On the centenary of Ingmar Bergman’s birth, Scandinavia House presents a tribute to the late artist with screenings of seven films organized by Laurence Kardish (former Senior Curator of Film, MoMA), beginning with a special event with Liv Ullmann, the celebrated actress, director, and partner of Bergman. On September 26, Ullmann joins us to present an introduction to a screening of Bergman’s final film Saraband (2003), the sequel to the iconic Scenes From a Marriage (1974), which returns to Marianne (Ullmann) and Johan (Erland Josephson) thirty years after their divorce. Following the film that evening, Ullmann will hold a special discussion with Kardish.
The series continues with a series of six classic Bergman titles that established not only his reputation in America, but contributed to the establishment of an art house cinema in the U.S.
