Presented in partnership with Scandinavian American Theater Company, this staged reading of Iceland playwright Hávar Sigurjónsson’s Our Boy examines the relationships between a mother, a father, their homosexual son, and his boyfriend. Through a series of isolated scenes of various lengths, themes like machismo, love and longing, sex, upbringing, and marriage are explored with an equal amount of seriousness and humor.
Our Boy premiered at the National Theatre of Iceland in January 2003. The reading will be performed by Annemette Andersen* (Denmark), Jason Beckmann (USA), Albert Bendix (Denmark) and Jason C. Brown* (USA) (*Member of the Actors’ Equity Association) and directed by Norwegian theatre director Henning Hegland. Presented in arrangement with Nordiska ApS, Copenhagen, this event is made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by LMCC.
About the Playwright
Hávar Sigurjónsson graduated from Manchester University Drama Department with a BA honors degree in 1982 and completed his Masters in Theatre Arts at Leeds University Workshop Theatre in 1983. Since 1983 he has worked professionally in Iceland as a stage director, writer, translator and journalist.
From 1992-1997 he was attached to the National Theatre of Iceland as a stage director and dramaturge. Since 1997 he has worked as a freelance writer and cultural journalist on the largest daily newspaper of Iceland: Morgunbladid.
