The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Directed by Niels Arden Oplev (2009). Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly-knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. 152 min.

The film opens March 19 in New York at Lincoln Plaza Cinemas, Cinema 1, 2, 3rd Avenue, Chelsea Cinemas, and Sunshine Cinema. Other cities opening March 19 include Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, San Francisco, Seattle, and San Diego.

SNØHETTA, architecture – landscape – interior

The innovative, award-winning, and environmentally conscious architectural firm, Snøhetta, will be featured in a multi-faceted exhibition, opening on February 4, 2010. SNØHETTA, architecture – landscape – interior offers insights into the design and construction of the firm’s most important works, including the celebrated Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt, the recently completed Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo, Norway, and the planned National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion in New York. Organized and initially presented by the National Museum – Architecture in Oslo earlier this year, this exhibition includes films, photographs, drawings, models, and interactive learning devices.

Commissioned by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the exhibition is produced by Norway’s National Museum of Art, Architecture, and Design in close collaboration with Snøhetta. Support for the exhibition has been provided by the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York and Tova Borgnine. The curator is Eva Madshus, Senior Curator at the National Museum—Architecture in Oslo.

Composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) came to prominence during Finland’s golden age of the arts. The timing was no coincidence, for Sibelius helped to shape that golden era while in turn being shaped by it. In her talk, Dr. Glenda Dawn Goss who teaches at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and is a former Professor of Musicology at the University of Georgia, will present this national creative tide in the context of Nordic cultural currents and will discuss the vital importance of the wider Nordic world for the creation of that display.

Is government involvement needed to secure gender equality or are corporations already leading the way? Have the principles of gender equality been established or does the debate need to continue? Audun Lysbakken, Norwegian Minister of Children, Equality and Social Inclusion, addresses these topics in a key note address and seminar, with a panel discussion moderated by Michael Kimmel, Stony Brook University.

Despite a continuing favorable trend in the occurrence of most cardiovascular diseases, heart failure is a significant and growing public health problem. Jan Mårtensson, visiting ASF scholar and Associate Professor of Nursing at the School of Health Sciences and Supervisor at the Primary Care Research and Development Unit in Jönköping, Sweden, compares follow-up care for heart disease patients in Sweden and the United States. Mårtensson also highlights the most important reforms that must be accomplished in heart disease and health care in the near future.

The Finnish gymnastic group Lahjän Tytöt combines Finnish art and sport in an enchanting combination of high-energy modern dance, group aesthetic gymnastics, and traditional folk song and dance. This performance will tell the story of Aladdin, interpreted through dance and aesthetic group gymnastics.

 

Fastelavn Workshop

Bring your kids and friends to Fastelavn at Scandinavia House! Originating in Denmark, Fastelavn is sometimes described as a “Nordic Halloween” with kids dressing up in costumes and gathering treats for the Fastelavn feast. Children are invited to dress-up while playing traditional games and learning songs, including beat the barrel and crown the king and queen of the barrel. There will be treats including fastelavnsris and fastelavns boller (fastelavns buns) for everyone.
