Nordic Summer Jam

Trained in an ancient Irish style of A Capella singing known as Sean-Nos, Tom Hayes’ music evokes the lyrical and musical styles of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake. His blend of the contemporary and traditional is a unique sound with its roots in rock and soul, as well as folk.

NICKCASEY are singer/songwriters Casey Spindler and Nicholas Webber. Their recently finished first, full-length studio album Can’t Reason Through Love, with Grammy-winning engineer and producer Chris Shaw (Bob Dylan; Lou Reed; Wilco; Jeff Buckley) is scheduled for release fall of 2010.

Swedish detective Kurt Wallander is back for a second season of all-new riveting investigations. Originally screened in Sweden in 2009 and for the first time this summer at Scandinavia House, this second season is based on original stories by author Henning Mankell and produced by Yellow Bird, the company who produced the film-adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.

The Revenge/Hämnden

A heavy explosion ruptures the peace and quiet in Ystad. The town’s single transformer station has blown up, with more explosions following shortly thereafter. Are the explosions acts of sabotage or terrorism? Everything is chaos and Wallander fumbles in darkness as he tries to chase down the culprits.

One day, six year-old Albin Landberg disappears without a trace. The search leads Wallander and his colleagues to a man recently released from jail who was previously sentenced for pedophilia. As the investigation continues it becomes evident that the crime has its roots in relationships far more complicated than the Ystad police could ever have imagined.

Eco Chic – Towards Sustainable Swedish Fashion

Eco Chic – Towards Sustainable Swedish Fashion showcases Swedish fashion designers who take an environmentally-friendly and ethical approach to their work, without sacrificing style. On view through August 21, this exhibition illuminates high-fashion alternatives to much of today’s environmentally harmful clothing.

This exhibition is commissioned and produced by The Swedish Institute. The curator and exhibition architect is Karin Gräns. Support for this exhibition was provided by The Swedish Institute, and the Consulate General of Sweden in New York.

A Child’s Adventure in the Swedish Countryside: A Storybook Installation
Saturdays, 12 – 5 pm, $5/child (FREE for ASF Members);

Leave New York City to discover the lives of some of Sweden’s most popular classic and contemporary children’s storybook characters! This interactive playscape allows children to explore, read, and interact with some of the country’s most beloved storybook characters while surrounded by vibrant murals evocative of the bucolic Swedish landscape.
