The 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! On Saturday, November 9, see Life and Love /  Elu ja armastus (dir. Helen Takkin, Estonia, 2024), which also screens opening night of the festival and virtually from November 10-17. Set during the Great Depression in 1933, this compelling drama follows Irma, a young woman who leaves her rural home to pursue a writing career in the city. There, she becomes entangled with her boss at a local print shop. As manipulation and toxic power dynamics take hold, Irma and those around her begin to realize that love and ambition come at a steep cost—especially as political tensions rise. *The screening will be followed by a film talk with director Helen Takkin.*

In 1933, a young woman leaves her rural home to chase her dream of becoming a writer in the city. She takes a job as a maid for a middle-aged printing house owner who quickly starts pursuing her romantically. They marry, but his passionate declarations of love soon turn cold. As political tensions rise in the country, their love story unfolds in a divided society, revealing toxic behaviors and power games that start innocently but lead to dire consequences.
