The 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! On November 8 see 8 Views of Lake Biwa /𝘉𝘪𝘸𝘢 𝘫𝘢̈𝘳𝘷𝘦 8 𝘯𝘢̈𝘨𝘶 (dir. Marko Raat, Estonia/Finland, 2024), a poetic fairy tale set in an isolated Estonian fishing village. On the shores of a shimmering lake, two teenage girls discuss their love interests, whispering prayers and poems while watching yachts sail to Kyoto. But magic is fading around them in the wake of a recent disaster, as villagers indulge in erotic art and spiritual spells; and it soon becomes clear that intimacy won’t help them process their loss. Estonia’s contender for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Academy Awards, 8 Views of Lake Biwa is a deeply visceral tale exploring a community that still believes in their connection to the universe. *The screening will be followed by a film talk with producer Ivo Felt and costume designer Reet Aus.*

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Marko Raat is Estonian writer-director, active in the fields of both arthouse fiction film and documentary since 1999. He has a vast background in theater directing, TV productions and in fine art. His latest feature length documentary Funeral Diaries (2019) premiered at Dok.Fest Munich and was the opening film of DocPoint Tallinn. His most recent short film A Chairman’s Tale (2015) had its debut at the International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia. His last feature length fiction film The Snow Queen (2010) had been developed at SOURCES2 and premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival. Marko premiered his fresh feature film 8 Views of Lake Biwa 8 at IFFR 2024. He’s currently working on his next documentary project, I’m a Bird Now.

The 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November continuing its tradition of bringing the best new films from the Baltic region to New York audiences.

Established in 2018, the New York Baltic Film Festival is presented and organized by Scandinavia House in collaboration with the Embassy of Estonia, Consulate General of Lithuania, and Permanent Mission of Latvia to the United Nations in New York.
