In this unique concert Italian musician Marco Fusi performs four new compositions by Scandinavian composers on the viola d’amore—a nearly forgotten 14-stringed bowed instrument. The four Scandinavian composers Ylva Lund Bergner, Johan Svensson, Axel Rudebeck, and Øyvind Mæland
were commissioned to create new works in a project supported by the Nordic Culture Fund. The viola d’amore’s height of popularity was during the Renaissance and early Baroque period, and now finds new life through the work of these composers and Fusi’s interpretation of them.
About Marco Fusi
Violinist, violist, and composer Marco Fusi has studied with Dimitrios Polisoidis, Ernst Kovacic, and Jeanne-MarieConquer. Fusi has performed with conductors and soloists including Pierre Boulez, Lorin Maazel, Peter Eötvös, Beat Furrer, Susanna Mälkki, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Gustav Kuhn, Jürg Wyttenbach, Jean Deroyer, and Marco Angius. He has premiered new works by composers Scelsi, Eötvös, Sciarrino, Billone, among others. He has had the opportunity to perform concerts in renowned halls such as Beyond Baroque in Los Angeles, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, and the Béla Bartók Concert Hall in Budapest.
His complete recording of John Cage’s Freeman Etudes was released by Stradivarius. He has been invited to present this project, giving concerts, masterclasses, and lectures at University of Southern California, Columbia University, Arizona State University, Basel Musikhochschule, and the Milan Conservatory.
Fusi was a member of Lucerne Festival Academy from 2007 to 2012, under the artistic and musical direction of Pierre Boulez. In August 2012 he was part of the “Haas 3rd String Quartet Project”, working with the composer at his 3rd String Quartet, performed in Lucerne and New York City.
