This December, experience the Nordic holidays with a series of virtual workshops from the Children’s Center! In this series, learn how Scandinavians prepare for Christmas through programs teaching how to make traditional holiday items such as woven hearts and yarn tomtar.

In the second event, see how to make a yarn tomte! A Swedish tomte (known as a nisse in Denmark or tonttu in Finnish) is one of the most familiar creatures of Scandianavian folklore. Often characterized by long white beards and bright knit caps, similar to a garden gnome, they are also typically associated with the winter solstice and holiday season, and are widespread throughout Nordic homes this time of year! In this craft workshop, you’ll learn how to make your very own household tomte, using yarn and other basic craft materials.

The event will take place simultaneously as a premiere on both YouTube and Facebook; watch then to chat with us during the presentation on either platform! The series will continue with a final craft tutorial on December 23.

An instructions booklet is provided for this and all events; to download the booklet, please click here.
