Join us for a screening of Memory of Water (dir. Saara Saarela, Finland, 2022), an explosive new Finnish dystopian thriller. Based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Emmi Itäranta, “Memory of Water combines sci-fi and drama on a grand scale” (Aalto.fi).
In an apocalyptic near future of ongoing environmental catastrophe, the totalitarian Scandinavian Union has imposed severe rations on the peninsula’s dwindling water supply. Noria is a young woman apprenticing her father, the sage tea master of their water-scarce village. When her father unexpectedly dies, Noria becomes the new tea master, finding herself in a daunting position of great spiritual and political authority. Then, she makes a shocking discovery: a well-preserved source of clean drinking water, far out in the wilderness. As she investigates the mysterious oasis, it becomes clear that her military government is complicit in a conspiracy to dehydrate the masses. Will she risk her life to expose the truth? Can one person save the world from drought?
