Join us on Saturday, May 22, for a virtual studio visit with Finnish artist Heidi Hankaniemi! Based in New York City, Heidi works primarily with handmade textiles, embroideries, lace, and crochets, collecting and receiving damaged and discarded handiworks from flea markets and charity shops around the world. With a background in conceptual art, Heidi appropriates these handmade materials, created and labored on by generations of women, and sews them into tapestries and installations. Bringing attention to the labor and care within the domestic environments that shape us, Heidi honors the original makers of these materials, while creating new physical, and emotional bonds by her own hand.

In this virtual tour, Heidi will show viewers her studio in Manhattan, and describe a weekly pilgrimage to the Chelsea flea market, while sharing her latest work and installations.

Heidi Hankaniemi was born in Ekenäs Finland, and now lives and works in New York City. Heidi received her BA (Hons) Degree in Critical Fine Art Practice from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, London, and went on to a MA History Degree in South East Asian Art at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe and in the U.S., including at The Moscow Museum of Modern Art and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work is in private collections in Europe and America and has been featured in publications ranging from Artnet and Vogue to Hola and Hello!.
