The Norwegian string quartet, Quartetto Testosterone, presents both of Edvard Grieg’s quartets in an entirely Scandinavian program at Scandinavia House. The quartet includes musicians Sondre Fjose Sandberg, violin; Daniel Lyngstad, violin; Jakob Dingstad, viola; and Sverre Barratt-Due, cello. Written at two very different stages of his life, Grieg’s string quartets offer a clear contrast to one another, yet sharing folkloric elements common in Norwegian music of the national romantic era.
Quartetto Testosterone will be performing both the light and cheery F major quartet, which was left unfinished with only two movements fully completed, and is rarely performed; and the grand, dramatic G minor quartet, which stands as one of Grieg’s foremost works and is a central piece in the European chamber music literature.
About the Performers
Quartetto Testosterone was founded in Oslo in 2008 and has performed in most of the important venues for classical music in Norway. Appearances in festivals include Oslo Quartet Series, Risør Chamber Music Festival, Harmos Festival (Portugal), several concerts in Florence (Italy) and The Royal Palace in Oslo. In 2018 the quartet returns to the United States after their performance in Carnegie Hall in 2016.
The quartet won 1. prize in the Norwegian National Youth Music competition and were finalists in the Rimbotti International String Quartet Competition (Italy). The quartet has received valuable coaching and inspiration from the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA) and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.
