Internationally-acclaimed Swedish violin virtuoso Christian Svarfvar joins Music on Park Avenueartistic director Per Tengstrand for an evening of
explosive and exciting chamber music, including Maurice Ravel’s Violin Sonata No. 2 in G major (1923-27).
About Christian Svarfvar
Christian Svarfvar (b. 1982) is an award-winning violinist and one of Scandinavia’s most sought-after and exciting musicians.
Born into a family of musicians, Svarfvar began to play the violin at the age of five under the supervision of Sven-Ole Svarfvar his father and concertmaster of a number of leading orchestras in Scandinavia. By the age of 12, Svarfvar made his solo debut with Charles-Auguste de Bériot’sViolin Concerto No. 7, Op. 76 with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. After which he was invited back to perform Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64 the following year.
After completing his compulsory education, Svarfvar began his studies at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm under the supervision and guidance of Professor Henryk Kowalksi and later Professor Per Enoksson.
In 2004 Svarfvar was admitted to The Julliard School, where he studied with Robert Mann, founder and first violinist of The Julliard String Quartet and completed the school’s two-year program in one year.
In addition to Julliard, Svarfvar has received scholarships from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF).
Svarfvar has performed all over the world and worked with such conductors as Stefan Solyom, Hannu Lintu, Vassily Sinaisky, Douglas Boyd, Howard Shore, Petter Sundqvist, Brett Dean, Marin Alsop, and Jorma Panula. He has also performed as a soloist with all major Swedish orchestras, inclusive of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Musica Vitae, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, the Stockholm Sinfonietta, the Northern Chamber Orchestra, and The Royal Opera Orchestra, among others.
His career highlights include a celebrated performance of Carl Nielsen’s Violin Concerto, Op. 33with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (2003), P.I. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, Op. 35 with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra and appearances with the Stockholm Sinfonietta, as well as numerous chamber music and violin recitals at Lincoln Center (2004), an acclaimed performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in Tchaikovsky Hall, Moscow, and a series of concerts at Seoul Art Center, Seoul (2013). He also released a widely-praised recording of the complete violin sonatas by Edvard Grieg.
Svarfvar plays a Stradivarius Anno violin from 1709.
