This summer Scandinavia House hosts performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented young jazz musicians, composers, and singers over five consecutive Thursdays, June 23 through July 21. All Summer Jazz concerts will be preceded by a reception on the Volvo Hall terrace starting at 6 PM.
The Oskar Stenmark NY-Nordic Quartet combines the jazz sounds of New York and Sweden to create something that has never been heard before. In this concert the quartet takes on the compositions of jazz legends Jan Johansson and Lars Gullin who incorporated Nordic folk melodies into their work.
About Oskar Stenmark
Flugelhorn player Oskar Stenmark was raised in a musical family in Gothenburg, Sweden. His family comprises generations of professional musicians, so he split his childhood between the concert hall and the local jazz club where he quickly developed an interest in music, eventually picking up the trumpet. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Improvisation at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, Stenmark moved to New York to pursue his musical dreams.
He has performed with stars such as James Morrison, Dave Liebman, and the multiple GRAMMY award winner Maria Schneider Orchestra. He is a member of the Master of Music in Jazz Arts class of 2016 at the Manhattan School of Music where he continues to develop his playing and artistic vision.
Leading the NY-Nordic Quartet, Stenmark explores the traditional melodies he inherited from his Swedish ancestors and fuses them with the sounds of New York. Joining Stenmark in the quartet are Norwegian jazz drummer Dag Markhus, Finnish pianist Tuomo Uusitalo, and American bassist and vocalist Lauren Seay.
