The 7th Annual New York Baltic Film Festival (NYBFF) presented by Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America returns this November with the best new films from the Baltic region! On November 8 see 8 Views of Lake Biwa / Biwa järve 8 nägu (dir. Marko Raat, Estonia/Finland, 2024), a poetic fairy tale set in an isolated Estonian fishing village. On the shores of a shimmering lake, two teenage girls discuss their love interests, whispering prayers and poems while watching yachts sail to Kyoto. But magic is fading around them in the wake of a recent disaster, as villagers indulge in erotic art and spiritual spells; and it soon becomes clear that intimacy won’t help them process their loss. Estonia’s contender for Best International Feature Film at this year’s Academy Awards, 8 Views of Lake Biwa is a deeply visceral tale exploring a community that still believes in their connection to the universe. *The screening will be followed by a film talk with producer Ivo Felt and costume designer Reet Aus.*
“A peculiar and spiritual world…One of the most unique films of the year and maybe even a bona-fide masterpiece” (Cineuropa)
“Contemplative and profound” (In Review Online)
