See an epic, sweeping drama about a young couple’s survival on the remote island of Stormskär, Stormskerry Maja (dir. Tiina Lymi, Finland, 2024).
Based on the beloved books of Ålandic writer Anni Blomqvist, Stormskerry Maja stars Amanda Jansson as Maja, who at the age of 17 marries fisherman Janne (Linus Troedsson) and moves with him to a remote island. Here, her life is full of challenges and adversities: as a fisherman’s wife, she has to cope with her husband’s long absences at sea and take care of her family alone. As time passes, however, Maja grows into a strong-willed and independent woman, who is not afraid to tackle the barren archipelago. As Maja and Janne’s connection deepens across time, they face numerous challenges and upheavals, including the Åland War, along the way.
“An ample, epic, romantic and feminist drama… a beautiful mastery of time ellipses, a very touching portrait of a woman stronger than she thought she was and which easily resonates today” (Cineuropa).
